When Everyone Turns Right, Turn Left

You're standing in your kitchen with two bottles and a decision you've already made but won't admit to yet.

One of them is what everybody expects. The Cali cab. The safe pour. The bottle that gets nodded at and forgotten before the next one is opened. Nobody will say anything about it because nobody needs to. They already know what it tastes like before the cork comes out.

The other one is heavy in your hand. Plain label. Nothing that would stop anyone in a wine shop. Not eye appealing. Not the kind of bottle that sells itself from across the room. But the secret is in the bottle. You know that. You know what's inside it and what it would do to a room full of people who've never been where that wine comes from.

You go back and forth. Safe bottle. Different bottle. Safe bottle. Different bottle.

What if they don't get it. What if someone makes a face. What if the question comes — who brought this — and it lands wrong.

You grab the safe one. You tell yourself next time.

You're in the car before you realize you're already thinking about the one you left on the counter. Not the traffic. Not where you're going. Just that heavy plain bottle sitting at home that would have knocked every person in that room sideways if you'd just had the nerve to walk out the door with it.

You knew it when you put it back. You know it now.

You get there. You pour it. And the room keeps doing what it was already doing. Gossiping. Laughing. Not paying attention to what's in the glass. The wine isn't even part of the conversation. It's just background noise. Another Cali cab going around the table while everybody talks about something else.

Nobody leans in. Nobody goes quiet. Nobody sets their glass down and says what is this.

The conversation moves on. The bottle gets finished. Nobody will remember it tomorrow.

You did that. You made that choice on the drive over and you're sitting in the middle of it now.

The bottle you left at home would have stopped that room cold. Not because it was expensive. Not because it was rare. Because it was different. Because it was from somewhere nobody at that table had ever been. Because the secret was in the bottle and you were the only one who knew it.

You knew that when you picked it up. You knew it when you put it back. You knew it the whole drive over.

You just didn't trust them enough to find out. Or maybe you didn't trust yourself.

Next time walk in with the heavy plain bottle. The one that doesn't sell itself. Set it down. Pour it. Say what you should have said this time.

I brought something different. I know it's not what you normally drink. But it's time to play.

When everyone turns right — turn left.

Trust your taste. Make them trust it too.
